UAE on your phone: payment, taxi, metro, internet, and calls

In the UAE, a phone is needed almost immediately: to open a map, call a taxi, pay for a ride, find a hotel, check a reservation, contact a transfer, and build a metro route.

But there’s a catch: in the Emirates, not everything on the phone works the same as at home. A Russian bank card may not go through. The airport terminal affects the route. A nol card is needed for transport. It’s more convenient to call a taxi through Careem. And calls in familiar messengers may be restricted.

Below is a brief description of what to set up before flying to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Sharjah.

1. Entry: check the validity for your passport

Reference:

Russian citizens
→ up to 90 days within a 180-day period

Kazakh citizens
→ 30-day visa on arrival

Before the trip, still check the conditions specifically for your passport, route, and airline.

Save offline:

  • passport
  • hotel reservation
  • return ticket
  • insurance
  • hotel address
  • hotel contact

Not just in email. It’s better to have a PDF + screenshots directly in the phone’s memory.

2. Payment: Russian card is not a plan

If you have a Visa or Mastercard from a Russian bank, don’t rely on it in the UAE.

A normal set:

cash AED / USD
+
foreign bank card
+
spare card
+
Apple Pay / Google Pay, if a working card is linked

AED - UAE dirham, local currency.

Tip: don’t exchange the entire amount at the airport. Take some cash to start: taxi, water, tips, small expenses. It’s better to exchange the main amount in the city or pay with a working card.

Where cash may come in handy:

  • tips
  • small purchases
  • markets
  • taxi in a backup scenario
  • deposit / small payments

3. DXB: check the terminal before departure

DXB - Dubai International Airport, the main airport in Dubai.

If arriving at DXB, it’s important to know the terminal.

DXB Terminal 1
→ has access to Dubai Metro Red Line

DXB Terminal 3
→ has access to Dubai Metro Red Line

DXB Terminal 2
→ more often taxi / bus / transfer

Dubai Metro Red Line - the red line of Dubai Metro. It’s convenient if the hotel is near the metro or you’re going to a well-known area: Deira, Downtown, Business Bay, Dubai Marina, JLT, etc.

Before departure, check:

→ airport
→ terminal
→ hotel area
→ metro or taxi
→ backup route

Dubai is large. A hotel in Deira, Downtown, Business Bay, Marina, JBR, Palm Jumeirah, or Dubai Creek means different road scenarios.

4. nol card: what it is and why you need it

nol card - Dubai’s transport card.

It’s used for:

  • metro
  • buses
  • tram
  • RTA water transport
  • some parking and city services

If you plan to use public transport, a nol card will almost certainly be needed.

Quick logic:

many trips around the city
→ nol card will be useful

hotel near the metro
→ metro is often more convenient than traffic

only airport → hotel → beach
→ taxi may be enough

Tip: if you live near a metro station, don’t ignore the metro. Taxis in Dubai are convenient, but distances and traffic can be surprisingly unpleasant.

5. Careem, Hala, S’hail: what to install

Careem - a popular app for rides, deliveries, and city services. For tourists, the main point: it’s convenient to call a taxi through Careem.

Hala Taxi - Dubai’s city taxi, which is called through Careem.

S’hail - RTA app for building routes using public transport: metro, bus, tram, taxi, and other options.

Install before departure:

  • Careem
  • Uber
  • S’hail
  • Google Maps
  • nol Pay
  • bank app
  • booking app

nol Pay - an app for working with the nol card: convenient for checking and topping up if your phone and card are supported.

Why it’s better to install all this in advance: apps may ask for a phone number, SMS code, card, geolocation, and account confirmation.

It’s better to go through this at home, not at the airport exit.

Tip: save the hotel not just by name, but as a point on the map. There are many similar names of towers, buildings, residences, and hotels in Dubai.

6. Metro is convenient, but not everywhere

Dubai Metro is well-suited for:

  • DXB T1 / T3
  • Deira
  • Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall
  • Business Bay
  • Mall of the Emirates
  • Dubai Marina
  • JLT
  • Expo area

But often a taxi will be needed:

  • Palm Jumeirah
  • JBR within the area
  • beaches
  • restaurants not near the metro
  • hotels far from the station
  • new areas

Simple principle:

metro - for long, clear routes
taxi - to get "to the entrance"
Careem / Hala - when you don’t want to hail a car on the street

7. The main nuance of the UAE: calls in messengers

In the UAE, voice and video calls through familiar messengers may not work as they do at home.

Usually, a tourist thinks:

there’s internet
→ so you can call as usual

In the UAE, it’s better to think differently:

there’s internet
→ maps, taxis, bank, messages work
→ VoIP calls may be restricted

VoIP - calls over the internet: voice and video calls in apps.

What to do before the trip:

  • inform loved ones
  • save the usual hotel number
  • save the transfer contact
  • check alternatives for calls
  • install allowed apps

In the list of allowed VoIP apps by TDRA, for example:

  • Zoom
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Google Meet
  • BOTIM
  • GoChat
  • Voico
  • Comera

Important: eSIM, local SIM, or roaming provide internet but do not cancel local VoIP rules.

8. Internet: roaming, tourist SIM, or eSIM

Options:

Roaming
→ convenient if the price is clear in advance

Tourist SIM
→ can be purchased from local operators
→ usually requires a passport
→ physical SIM takes up a slot

eSIM
→ can be prepared before departure
→ no need to find the operator’s counter
→ phone must support eSIM

Before choosing eSIM, check:

  • country: UAE / United Arab Emirates
  • data volume
  • validity period
  • activation moment
  • support for internet sharing
  • phone compatibility
  • installation instructions

You can view eSIM packages for the UAE at eSIM.bar

Before connecting, check the conditions of the specific package: validity period, data volume, activation moment, and device support.

9. Medications: don’t bring “just in case” without checking

The UAE has strict rules regarding medications and controlled substances.

If you’re bringing prescription medications, strong painkillers, sedatives, sleeping pills, psychotropic drugs, or other controlled substances - check the rules in advance.

Minimum:

  • original packaging
  • prescription
  • medical certificate in English
  • check the status of the medication
  • permission if the medication is controlled

A regular tourist first-aid kit is usually not a problem. But with prescription and controlled medications, it’s better not to guess.

10. What to save offline

List in notes:

☐ passport
☐ hotel reservation
☐ insurance
☐ return ticket
☐ hotel address
☐ hotel point on the map
☐ hotel contact
☐ transfer contact
☐ offline map of the area
☐ eSIM instructions
☐ support number

Quick check before departure

☐ payment method works
☐ cash for start is available
☐ Careem is installed
☐ route from the airport is clear
☐ hotel saved as a point on the map
☐ internet chosen: roaming / SIM / eSIM
☐ clear on calls in messengers
☐ backup communication method available
☐ important documents saved offline
☐ medications checked

The UAE is a convenient destination if you don’t rely on “I’ll figure it out there.”

The main thing is to check in advance: payment, transport, internet, and communication method. Especially calls - because in the UAE, “there’s internet” doesn’t always mean “you can call like at home.”
