In Turkey, a tourist often needs not an "ideal suitcase," but a well-prepared phone.
Because it contains - a map, taxi, bank, booking, translator, hotel address, communication with the guide, transfer, and loved ones.
And yes: if all this is on the phone but there is no internet — the plan becomes fragile.
Below is a brief overview of the most important points.
1. Entry: briefly
For Russian citizens in 2026, Turkey is visa-free - up to 60 days. However, the total stay in the country is allowed for no more than 90 days within six months.
For Kazakh citizens in 2026 - up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
But this does not negate the simple fact: it’s better to have screenshots of documents on your phone offline.
Save:
passport
hotel booking
insurance
return ticket
hotel contacts
hotel address in Turkish
2. Money: don’t rely on one card
If you have a Russian bank card MIR, Visa, Mastercard - it will not work abroad as an international card.
A normal set for Turkey:
cash for the first day
foreign bank card, if available
spare card
verified UnionPay, if you use it
UnionPay is found in Turkey, but it’s better not to make it the only option. It’s better to think: if it works - great, if not - there’s a backup.
Tip: don’t exchange the entire amount at the airport right away. It’s usually more convenient to have some cash for "getting there/eating," and do the main exchange in the city.
3. Istanbul: check the airport first
Istanbul has two main airports:
IST - Istanbul Airport
SAW - Sabiha Gökçen
This is not a minor detail. They are on different sides of the city and have different routes.
If arriving at IST:
→ metro M11 to Gayrettepe
→ then transfers around the city
→ Havaist as an option to popular areas
If arriving at SAW:
→ metro M4 to Kadıköy
→ then ferry/metro/route in the area
→ Havabus as an option to Taksim or Kadıköy
What to know before departure:
arrival airport
hotel area
route to the hotel
backup option
* hotel location on the map
In Istanbul, taxis are not always faster. Traffic can easily eat up the advantage.
4. Antalya: not everything ends at the airport
If flying to Antalya, check not only AYT but also where exactly you are going:
Antalya city
Kemer
Belek
Side
Alanya
Lara / Kundu
* Konyaaltı
For the city of Antalya, there is AntRay - a tram line from the airport towards the center. The bus schedule can be viewed through Antalyakart.
But if the hotel is in Side, Belek, Kemer, or Alanya, the question is no longer "how to exit the airport," but "how to find your transfer and not lose contact."
Save before departure:
tour operator / transfer name
bus number or voucher
guide / transfer contact
exact hotel address
* hotel location on the map
5. Taxi: install apps in advance
For Turkey, it’s worth installing in advance:
BiTaksi
Uber
Google Maps / other map app
translator
bank app
booking app
BiTaksi and Uber work with taxis, but registration, SMS, card, and geolocation may be needed before the first ride.
Check this at home, not at the airport exit.
Tip: save the hotel address in Turkish and the location on the map. It’s easier for the driver to show the point than to explain the hotel name verbally.
6. Wi-Fi is available. But it’s not a plan
At Istanbul Airport, Wi-Fi is available, but access requires authorization via SMS or access code.
So the scenario "I’ll arrive and connect to Wi-Fi" may work. Or it may turn into unnecessary hassle.
For hotels, the same applies: Wi-Fi is usually available, but it doesn’t help in taxis, on the street, at the beach, on the bus, and when searching for an address.
Therefore, it’s better to plan connectivity in advance.
7. Internet: roaming, SIM, or eSIM
The options are simple:
Roaming
→ convenient if the price is clear in advance
Local SIM
→ may be beneficial for a long trip
→ but is purchased and registered on-site
eSIM
→ can be prepared before departure
→ requires a phone that supports eSIM
What to check before purchasing eSIM:
country: Turkey / Türkiye
data volume
validity period
activation moment
whether internet sharing is allowed
whether the phone supports eSIM
* whether there is an installation guide
You can view eSIM packages for Turkey at eSIM.bar
Before connecting, check the conditions of the specific package: data, duration, activation, and device compatibility.
8. If you’re going for a long time
For a regular vacation, the issue of registering a phone is usually not a priority.
But if you plan to live in Turkey for a long time, consider IMEI: a foreign phone used with Turkish mobile networks may require registration after a set period. This is usually not a problem for a tourist trip, but it’s an important detail for a long stay.
9. Quick checklist before departure
Save this directly in your notes:
☐ hotel address in Turkish
☐ hotel location on the map
☐ booking and insurance offline
☐ return ticket offline
☐ transfer / guide contact
☐ taxi app installed
☐ route from the airport checked
☐ payment method understood
☐ offline map downloaded
☐ internet chosen: roaming / SIM / eSIM
☐ eSIM instructions saved
Turkey is not complicated, but an unprepared phone can easily add unnecessary quests.
The best scenario is simple: arrive, open the map, find the transfer, message loved ones, and go on.
